Using Grape concentrate/juice in country wines

I have just started making an elderberry and blackberry wine last night and in a few days I will be straining the mix through muslin and racking to a demijohn.

In the recipe I'm following it says to use 250 g of red grape concentrate when racking to the demijohn. The homebrew suppliers I have looked up on web have grape concentrate in 900 g cans I think so that is a lot more than I need for this wine!  :-\ What modifications would be required when using say cartons of grape juice from lidl? I am using a recipe from Jack Thompson's book Brewing - A step by step guide to making beer, wine and cider

Red grape juice isn't always a great substitute for concentrate. Why not just used raisins, which are dried grapes anyway? I'm not at home, so I can't check quantities, but I think you'd need about 250g.

Sorry, got interrupted. Put the raisins in a jug, scald them with boiling water to clean any oil off, strain, and them chop them up. Add these to your wine now, and strain off when you strain off the berries. This will add vinosity and body to your brew. I never buy concentrate - it's dear, and I don't need it. My wines are for me, friends and family, not for shows, and I get very few complaints! Hope that helps.

Thanks Col I will buy raisins tomorrow in a supermarket. I will be making up a batch of about 4.5 litres - 1 demijohn. What weight of raisins should I use do you think?

Col

I would go with about 450g of raisins for that amount of concentrate. Obviously, it won't give quite the same results as the concentrate, but it's cheaper, and we're not trying to make grape wine anyway, are we?

I went with 500 g of giant raisins in the end. Will be straining the mix on sunday or monday.
