I recall someone on Beoir a few years back shipping in a stainless steel conical and it started cheap but when transport cost and import tax was added it went up quite a bit. :-\

If u buy from a chinese conical maker he will normally quote CIF. That simply means he will arrange a local agent to ship the goods from the factory into a container and the container will arrive in dublin. the factorory's job is now done

Now see my post above. To get your goods from the post you have the fees I mentioned above inc unloading fees, admin fees, port fees anmd so on......then the tax man wants his share

23% of the TOTAL COST OF EVERYTHING

add up every cent you paid to date for anything to do with the purchase and taxman wants his / her 23%

thats how I understand it.

Most people just hire a shipping agent and they do all the donkleywork. the chinese will rarely give you a complete package they do CIF

brenmurph

@ cider, thats a good summary on the tax issue, but hasnt anything to do with getting a 2- ton conical in in a container which means u need a shipping agent and all the costs I outlined in my earlier post. I think some people think its just ba matter of VAT and maybe some import tax depending on the item, but in fact theres CIF paid to the chinese then numerous fees ( highlighted in my earlier example) associated with landing it in ireland and getting it out of the port

@ demsey, ur right  u have to be very careful and can be bad value if u get ur shipping fees mis calculated. The example I have a few posts up was for a car trailer which I think was about 20% of a 20 foot container ( which is how CIF shipping is done) where u rent a container or part container, then all the costs (NOT TAXES) associated with getting the ship landed, port fees, unloading fees, admin fees and so on have to be paid. A shipping agent taks all the stress out of it but u have to be careful not to get screwed by them
@ alex
when we done the BRU brewery day we chatted about his / their Chinese conicals, they arrived very cheap compared to european built ones, if I recall about half price for same spec and they are very happy with them so maybe a word in BRU's direction may be beneficial

I bring in circa 400 containers a year of product in from the US, FE and ME on FCA, FOB, CIF, DDU, DDP incoterms, didn't realise it was a big consignment, happy to pass on details of one of my clearing agents if required, expensive for one-offs.

Ive half my house on Chinese LED lights. I wish people would realise that nearly everything u buy in any shop ( harvey normal, the pound shop, argos) comes from china and is made in china, including yor IPHONES..

Theres nothing wrong with Chinese stuff however there of course are some dodgy dealers everywhere.
Bree leds are world reknowned for quality an are made in china. Most of the LED's appearing in Chadwicks, B&Q and so on are cheap chinese stuff. Specialist suppliers may supply Bree led products. they can be found on China ebay.
that said I have 1 led lamp blown and dozens working away fine including the 10watt spotlight in my brewery :)

Covey

Cool Bren, i replace all the ones in the house too, but i was checking the cabling to the sockets, look like the mice have had a good munch on the cable (for a sec i thought it was the lights) has any one else seen this (pics to follow). But ya replace 25 50wts halogen bulbs in all, the new ones are only 3 wts and are better :o.

ye Ive a 10 watt spot in the brewery putting close to a 500w halogen spotlight level of light ...  no heat just light. many of the other lights are 3 ish watts.

I have downlighters at 3 watts replacing the standard 50 watt down spots and I eben have a remote control led for my bar that has the option of a dozen or so different patterns and colours to add some effect at parties.

All in all if u know what ur buying ( fittings and so on) you can transform you whole houe to led for im guessing 100 euros ( from china of course)
Adjustable Downlight circa 3 dollars
E5 fitting triple led  circa 1.50 dollar
10 watt spotlight  10 euros

worth doin a bit of research especially if u have a lot of hot lights like halogens...its light we want not heat :)

That's Cree LEDs you mean Bren?

Covey I wouldn't have much confidence in those 1.99 lights. You get what you pay for with LEDs and there's some seriously bad quality lamps out there.

Philips lamps are also good, but as with Cree you'll pay more... but worth it in the long run!

brenmurph

yep Cree  wat did I say.
Cree would be the standard in branded LED projectors and industrial LED lighting.

Agree theres poor leds but just like you can shop in Curry's, pc world or Maplin for  Sony Panasonic or a harvey Norman own brand, if u research you may see that harvey Norman's 60 inch LED TV is made by LG who are as far as i know one of the few TV mass producers and rebadge for them all.
Often the cheaper TV will be a rebadged premium 'Brand' often with a better warranty and overall value for money.

the Chinese arnt a third world country, thay have facinating R&D, Huwai being one I know. you can Buy A Huwai Dual Sim phone with same spec as a Samsung S whatever for half the price.

If shopping in China from Ebay or alixpress check the suppliers credentials, many have a 100% record with tens of thousands of customers over many years and many goods are straight from the factory with no middle men (especially alixpress)

So same oul story again ,.... Buyer Beware

St. Fursey

I'm planning on filling the house with recessed LED lighting and LED strips - anyone have links to good deals?
I'd like to install both dimmable and non-dummable recessed lighting and RGB strips on the kitchen units

They are all over ebay, just filter worldwide.
Its potluck but if u want quality you may find link to Cree sellers. Otherwise just look at whether they are from a factory direct or an chinese electronics shop online.
