Was in there last night and couldn't help but notice that they seem to have completely replaced all the existing bar staff and replaced two of the taps with Heineken and Fosters. Added to the fact the fridges were nearly half empty I can't help but wonder if they are gonna close down? Would be a shame as I've always enjoyed their beers   :-[

Only a matter of time I'd say - I was in there twice a few weekends ago - Friday night there was around 8 people in there & Sunday there was literally no one in there but the bar staff  -ended up getting a pint of wrasslers and heading into the Mardyke bar with it  - it's a shame but if it had been a smaller bar in a better location I could have seen it doing better

That's a great point Kieran - the size of the place is hard to sustain it. Bierhalle seems to have closed up, hope it's a trend that doesn't continue. I'm not sure if it's a franchise per se Tubomyces, I do know there are a few Porterhouse bars but not sure how the ownership/management of them work.

Always thought bierhalle's pitch was a bit too fast food. The missus point blank refused to go there.

I like some of the porterhouse beers but their bars (i have been in) for me stink. the one in cork is particularly bad. i was at the launch and people spoke only of branding and nothing of beer. i didn't get the sense they tried to include beoir members in anyway. if it is closing i certainly won't miss it.

yes I heard the bierhalle was closing... not surprised by this. their food was well below par. the pub next door is great (not sure if it is the same ownership) but on the three occasion i ate in the bierhalle i was very disappointed. and once I had what was the worst curry I have ever eaten.

Great to see discerning folks voting with their feet where there is a choice.
Publicans that produce mediocre beer and food good luck.

True that. The porterhouse is a bit like Rearden's or some other 'superpub' just with good beers - and while I certainly wouldn't be a fan of those kind of pubs, I am quite fond of the Red and Hophead on draught  :P

Location was the handicap. Was in Cork over Christmas and couldn't justify a trip to the PH. Too far off the beaten track...and I was hanging for a pint of wrasslers.

I must say i didn't like the PH in temple Bar, the two times i was in there. it never felt like a pub more like a sort of tourist attraction. too big, weird stage for the band (which were crap). but the location is super.
for me the PH location in Cork was not the main deterrent. it is not that far from the city centre and near to UCC but there is something about the size and the way in which it is designed / marketed.  the launch was very business / glam with talk of the PH brand as opposed the beer. most people there seemed very confused about the beer.

i also wonder if Cork's own sense of itself would work against a Dublin brand. the rebel county and all that.  ;)

but 'the Devil's half acre' is one of the best drinks i have had in an age.

A dublin brewery using a West Cork stout recipe and putting the Commander-in-chief on the label was probably a sore point too

Went into the Cork Porterhouse a good few times when it opened, and just didn't like the place, and it only had draft hophead once or twice out of those times, and that was the main reason for me going in there. Pretty sure that it is a franchise, and not suprised if it closes, as have been expecting that since not long after it opened.

For me their Temple Bar.. Bar is one of my favourite bars in Ireland. When i heard they were opening up in Cork i was excited. I too have notice the demise of the bar in Cork and think it's a shame. We could do with more dedicated craft beer bars in Cork but maybe it's still too early for that. My feeling on it initially is that it would be a good stop off point before the Well and the Bierhaus. But, it didn't really work that way. I think it's too dark in there and all you have to do is to step into the Woolshed with your pint and you're into a brighter more vibrant atmosphere. Shame really.
