What would need to be in place for a brewery to sell bottles or serve a few pints a day or two a week from the premises? Growler fills as well. I'm thinking along the lines of most of the destination breweries in the US or closer to home, Kernel/Partizan/Brew By Numbers etc. in London.

Dublin Brewing company did it, that was a mad spot, all sorts of miscreants drinking their fill at 20 quid a pop, the air thick with ganja smoke. It was a great spot altogether. Not sure how they did it with the licensing.

Assuming you're in ROI you need a liquor licence. Current market cost is about €60,000.

If you were in Britain you just register with your council (I think) and pay an admin fee of something like £25.

It can vary by council/borough and they can impose additional instructions. There is a brew pub down in Faversham (Kent) that cannot sell their beer outside the pub (council did not want transport trucks coming through the town).

Its a good line of business for a brewery if you are in the UK, the usual terms of the bonded warehouse is that duty only becomes payable once it leaves the warehouse. If it gets drunk on site, then thats a big windfall to the brewery.

But yes, the RoI equivalent is a joke.

Jaysus, this country etc! I remember the Dublin Brewing company all right Eoin, I was there for a few "21st's" that where pretty much all night raves with plenty of decent booze. Always liked their Wicked Apple cider...

I think the north has different rules again too. Could always offer "tours" that include a free pint though. :p

It's something we're looking into when we have the full Stone Barrel brewery set up.

It's too expensive to apply for a second licence to allow people to purchase beer to drink on site but their may be a way around it by charging people for a "brewery tour" which includes certain amount of free beer. We would need to check the insurance implications tho also.

We are definitely looking at an off licence to let people come and full growlers to take away.

When our solicitor comes back with all the info I'll let you guys know,

Cheers

To purchase new, but their are a lot of off licences, as with on licences, that are in receivership. If the licence for either of these lapses while in the possession of the receiver, the disappear for ever. This means the receiver is left with a only the brocks and moror. Receivers are tryning to get rid of these before this happens, at hugely discounted prices.

From meeting with our solicitor, he advised that you can change an off licence form premises to premise a bit easier than an on licence.

We've literally just started thinking about this, last Thursday to be exact :) , so their may be a few holes in my knowledge.

Our main aim is to find a reasonable way to sell growlers direct from the warehouse

Perfecto,

Will have a good read this afternoon,

As I said, we're will in our infancy when it comes to this. The main thing at the minute is sorting out the brewery but it's something we'd love to look at while we're getting set up.

Its about bloody time someone took all this to Brussels!

Its all about restriction of trade.

Can you imagine if a bicycle repair shop had to come up with 60k for a license in order to repair/sell bikes!

Also Monopolies&Mergers might like to look into th granting of pub licenses in the major citys!

Certain "factions" have the trade "stitched up" if you ask me!
