Sorry for another question on this.

Long story short, bought and hacked two kettles and have elements removed etc but havent a breeze how to proceed after that. Couldnt wire a plug tbh

I then saw these on HBC website https://www.thehomebrewcompany.ie/spare-kettle-element-p-1100.html

I have my fermenter and will bore the hole no problem, also have copper piping etc for the tap, If I got this and a lead from the local hardware shop would it be a simple case of plugging one into the other.

Thanks

Graham

M8 not knocking you but for safety sake if ya can't wire a plug you shouldn't be messing with hacking elements for your own sake. Yes they will do the job but there is some lad called Charlie Shiels i believe sells them up around Dublin that most of the guys seem to go to for these.I am sure one of them will point you in the right direction. Be careful and brew on. ;D

Just make sure the kettle lead you buy is hot rated. ie:  has a little notch cut out of it at the bottom. Otherwise it wont slot into that HBC element. HBC also sell those hot rated kettle leads but you'd get one in an electrical shop for more than half the price.
On tap: Flanders, Gose,
Fermenting: Oatmeal Brown, 200ish Fathoms,
Ageing: bretted 1890 export stout.
To brew:  2015 RIS, Kellerbier, Altbier.

Once you have the leads and elements all you have to do is make a hole in your bucket.
Measure the hole on the kettle and use a hole-saw to sort your bucket.
Deburr/Tidy up the hole with a stanley knife.

Graham,

So you can't wire a plug? But you feel it is an okay thing to tear apart two kettles and have a little play around with a bit of electricity, ion rich water and bare wires? Does this appear entirely sensible to you?

Assuming you're just having a weak moment here, can I suggest you get someone who knows what they're doing to help you out. It would only take the tiniest of screw-ups for everything to become lethal.

C'mon, let's be sensible here.

@ hop bomb, have that sourced in my local hardware ship for 4.50 , notch included.

@johnrm im fine with those points and will be happy doing so with the pre-wired element

@JD pretty sure I am being sensible by going the HBC route, hacking the kettles was a simple case of undoing some screws, hardly rocket science. Once it involved wiring is when I decided on a different approach

What wiring?
If its a standard Kettle its got 3 pins out back.
All its missing is a receptacle to take the plug.

This is what I have after hacking my kettle, Its not as simple as placing the element in and connecting it back to the black yolk and then getting a kettle lead is it? Thought there was more to it then that

That's pretty much it.
Crude but effective.
The three pins at 1oclock in that pic are where your hot condition lead connects.
Careful with hole size! Too small can be made big, but not vice versa.
Practice on scrap plastic first.

Thanks John, I thought there was some kind of wiring involved, thats grand so. Uncle is a plumber so thats the rest sorted. Cheers Brother

Hi Graham,

I am in the process of making my own boiler too.  I followed this guide to hacking the tesco kettle (bargain at €6.91):
http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=36368

I actually soldered the wires together but the kettle plug is better and cleaner looking.  For the hole, a 38mm hole saw fits perfect.  I under estimated this and had to buy a new fermenter!!

Oh and if your uncle is a plumber, he should be able to help with a wort chiller.  Copper cost me €21 and i just wrapped it around a paint can, although be careful not to kink it.  Heres a guide to the chiller:
