Iron man brew competition

We could do with a third club competition. The Autumn seems to be the next best time of year for it.

I was thinking of kicking off a competition where you are given a number ingredients you must use in beer and the brewers only restrictions are their own imaginations.

For example...
Brewers must use a min of 80% base malt/extract
10% unmalted grain
10% unspecified grains
A certain hop
A fruit
An old shoe

Or even more simply
Brewers must use..
unmalted grain
Pine Nuts
Kiwi fruit
Or whatever

The beer that best showcases the special ingredients is the winner.

This is a pretty rough draft but the concept has been used before across the water and from talking to brewers it is very popular.

I don't think we can call it iron man either. Maybe Cú Chulainn brew would be better.

Any thoughts?

Tom

Are we using the old shoe as a source of wild yeast?

Sounds good! Like the name Cú Chulainn brew as well.

Sounds good. Just a quick heads up- Galway comp in the works for Sept. Just posting to avoid clashes. Details soon.
On tap: Flanders, Gose,
Fermenting: Oatmeal Brown, 200ish Fathoms,
Ageing: bretted 1890 export stout.
To brew:  2015 RIS, Kellerbier, Altbier.

Balls. Which comp is Sept? I thought the Red Ale comp was August?

Galway, Wicklow, NCB and Liffey comps coming up. Thought you were stepping down this term anyway?

This would be a national club event. Not an event just for locals.
Coordinated amongst the members it could be a great event.

Why so negative?

CARA

We could have 365 competitions a year as long as the judging days were separate Moriarty

Count us in here in Kildare we arnt new to using stuff from the garden, nettles, beetroot, spruce, corriander, myrtle....

great idea rossa I like a bita innovation....count 'Mashtun Murphy' in for sure.. :)

Nice. I'd love to see a real obscure ingredient used. Be it people have to pre register and the odd ingredient is ordered in or brewers are just told pick up ingredient X and wait further instructions.

Seaweed......now go....  :P

But i do like the sounds of a shopping basket style brew comp where the brewers are put on the fly & try to make something amazing from questionable ingredients they're not used to.
