Gas in the Garage

Hi guys

Just moved the brewing gear to the new gaff.  So I was wondering if anyone else uses gas for their brewing and where do they do it?

At the old house we did it in the back garden under a little shelter we built.  But the new house has a garage.  Anyone had any problems burning in the garage?

Was hoping to get a brew on this weekend so trying to figure out the new setup.

Yeah been having the same dilemma lately.  The conclusion from that thread would suggest it's fine as long as you have ventilation and a nice blue flame.  I'm still skeptical and haven't taken the plunge yet.  I don't think I'd do it without cracking the garage door open a good bit and having a carbon monoxide alarm in there.

Thanks for the reply Ciaran.  Looks like sound advice.  Good call on the CO alarm.  Have some in the house will need to get another for the garage!  I understand your reluctance.  If it's dry outside on Saturday I may just do it in the back garden.

Another concern I have was the steam/heat as there is no extractor fan.  Don't want it damaging the wood ceiling or creating a damp problem.  Though I'm guessing the ventilation would take care of that.  Along with dehumidifier.  I'll let you know how it goes.

I brew in the garage on gas. I have roll-up door which I open when brewing so there is always good ventilation and the kit is positioned pallet-brew style, with the kettle and HLT at the door. I agree about concerns regarding the steam as it tends to get blown-inwards, but by the time I've finished and cleaned up, it is well aired and have not seen any adverse effects, no condensation, no mould, etc.

don't see why it would be any different from having a gas hob in your kitchen.  Its a good idea to have CO alarms anyway if you have any sort naked flame or boiler in your house.

In my head the difference is you have an extractor fan in the kitchen and don't normally boil 60L of water for any length of time.

A friend of mine used to use and electric powered kettle as part of his BIAB system in his flat.  Even with all the windows opened we had to clean wort off the ceiling after brewing  :P

But it sounds like doing it at the garage door should be fine.  I heard elsewhere of using a fan to blow the steam out.  Might be worth a try if the wind isn't too strong.

Mate it's still not any better. You should've seen it last week after a 90 min boil and no wind  :-[

Oh no haha! I'm gathering you were brewing that Saison you were on about the other day.  Look forward to trying it!  Thinking I'll do it under the garage door but I'll need to think of some anti drip device..... like a towel.
