im in the process of getting a kegerator and fermentation chamber sorted in the shed and was looking a taps and they are pricey enough and seeing as the father has a laithe and some lovely woodworking chisels it could be a good project.plenty of bog oak up my way too.

if anyone knows where id get a female thread to insert at the bottom id be grateful. suppose id just glue it in at the bottom.

if anyone has any ideas id love to hear what ye think

like this one but with licence to be fancy  :D  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samuel-Adams-Limited-Beer-Tap-Draught-Handle-Chalk-Board-Brand-New-/201123967635?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ed3ec3293

make sure to use plenty of lubrication when inserting it into the female bottom. Glue is a bad idea. If you get sick of having wood you're stuck. But with a well lubricated female it just takes a good hard screw to get rid of that wood.

im so impatient sometimes, you know how it is when you want to screw the bottom so badly and you have run out of ideas. ill make sure to lubricate the shaft(not glue) and give it a good screw instead.

also here is some cool taps for those who like the more visual  ;D

We're still talking about taps right...
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

i think so molc im a little confused now to be honest.

if anyone has any ideas or tips for a woodworking novice id be grateful im a plumber myself(cue pipe jokes) so not much experience with timber but eager to learn. ive done some shelves and beer crates and like working with wood

Sweet Jesus.I didn't know Sid James was on this forum. It sounds like the plot for the latest carry-on brewing movie. I've seen some nice top handles made out of banisters or an old chair back. Cut them down paint them up and away you go.

yeah nigel the innuendo got a bit crazy there  ;) but the reason i want to do bog oak is because i just want an excuse to break out the chisels and make something fancy (and save a few bob) but mainly just an excuse to make something that might be a bit unique and thst looks good

I was wondering if I had accidently googled the wrong website. :P

hehe im going to have to make these now(any excuse for a project) to justify this thread  :)

Surprised there was no coke and hookers. Still page 1 though  :D

LordEoin

I thought it was pretty sound advice...

You can buy metal inserts that do the job. The female is say M6 machine screw, the male is a much bigger coarser thread that screws into the hole drilled in the timber ( about 10 or 12 mm diameter) McQuillans should stock them if 'tinternet doesnt!
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

cheers will ill give a look now and see what i find now i know what to look for

I used a lump of an old longbow that exploded on me (ow). I didn't bother putting in any inserts, just drilled it a little tight, and screwed it on gently by hand. It's lasted a while. Hard woods like my yew and your oak should take the stress.
