@Frequent Sequence do you pour the mash thru this or use it as an extra mesh layer ?

Frequent Sequence

when doing brew in a bag I let the bag drain sitting on the strainer. like this

I've recently started pumping from MT through an old spider very similar to the GB ones from Bridgwater and I'm amazed even using herms how much "fluff" I catch going into the boiler so something like this would be ideal, hot side aeration is a Homebrewers myth btw boiling for an hour takes care of any oxygen in any case

Yep I use one like that for sparge water. I normally start it up 30 minutes before sparge o'clock

would an induction hob like that be enough to boil (say) 15L of wort in a stockpot.  Under pressure to "take it outside, beerboy" - I considered a gas ring but I'd need to keep a spare cyclinder on hand and gas is expensive (and really inefficient if it's in any way windy).

I boiled 28 litres of wort on my 3kw buffalo induction hob last week. Works a treat.

this Aldi one's only 2kW but is 1/4 the price...

at the price of the Buffalo hob, I'd probably be looking at one of these instead (it's out of stock at the moment, hence the ridiculous price.  normally about £120).

boiling calculator here suggests 49 minutes to get 15L from 15C to boiling @ 2kW (assuming 90% efficiency) - that's pretty slow, though I'm not sure how long it takes on my kitchen (gas) hob currently

I got my buffalo hob as a referb unit on eBay. Works perfectly and only cost me about 130 euro. I had the ss brewtech kettle which is induction ready so it was a no brainer. The aldi one should be able to handle 15 litres though... That was the point of my post.

Why would you be going from 15c to boiling? Wouldn't you be going from sparge temp (67cish) to boiling?

assuming it comes out of the tap @ 15C...  15-->66 (mash) 66-->100 (boil).

Actually that's probably not much slower than my hob, takes the best part of half an hour to get to mash temp, and then what seems like forever to get to a rolling boil; I'd say it is the best part of an hour in total.

armedcor

Yea it's definitely not the fastest. I have my kettle wrapped in reflectix which you can't do on gas which is a plus! I think I got 20 litres from 18 to 68 degrees in about 20 mins give or take a few mins. I wasn't watching very closely.

Would this induction hob from Aldi be any way useful?

https://www.aldi.ie/en/specialbuys/hurry-while-stocks-last/hurry-while-stocks-last/ps/p/single-induction-hob-2/

I started using this hob recently. 14L of Water from 20C to 70C in 25 minutes. 70C to Boiling in 20 minutes. This is with a stainless steel stock pot wrapped with insulation.

shweeney

For me the point may be moot - just checked my stockpot and it's only very slightly magnetic so I don't think it would work with induction.
