The Bulldog Brewer shouldn't boil dry during mashing since the pump inlet is above the base and the temp probe should still be fully immersed, hence the mr Murphy reference . . . other factors!

Bulldog Brewer v2 has a centre pipe, and a perforated top plate to contain the grain. It may allow overflow back to the base; we will have to wait another week or two until we get our hands on them and take a closer look. Meanwhile, I'll try to get some pictures up online. It won't fix the poor conversion though if the wheat malt clogs things up.

Support for the bulldog Brewer will be first rate, hence the free top plates etc. We will be emailing all our Brewer customers with updates and advice re shared experiences from users worldwide. The wheat issue is probably obvious to most of you on nhc, but the Brewer is targeted at all grain noobies. For them, it's not so obvious and we need to fully support them.

Please don't use the pump on the Bulldog Brewer when the temperature is over 80 oC as I think this will destroy the pump and the warranty may not cover it. I need to check this though.

I don't think the pumps in any of these systems can handle any more than mash out / sparge temperatures. The Speidel pump won't turn on above 80 oC, but you can force the Bulldog Brewer pimp to turn on at higher temps and thus damage it.

I will get in touch with the manufacturers to get the max temp rating and post up as soon as I know.

Any ideas how finely I should crush the grain for the Bulldog?

HomeBrewWest

I don't have the precise roller gap for the Bulldog Mill, but will see if I can buy a feeler gauge to measure it. Or perhaps others have already measured it for similar systems?

I've already posted this about 6 posts back:
" . . . use a COARSE mill setting on the Bulldog Mill for the barley malt since this will keep the husks intact, and the wort will flow through: you need to be very careful so that you just crack the husks, and do not smash the husks to bits. So set the gap just small enough to crack all the husks, and then set it a tad finer. After lots of testing for Speidel micros, we've found this to give the best results. It will be the same for the Bulldog Brewer . . . . "

I've always used 0.040"/1mm gap with the Bulldog mill. Also I find that conditioning the grain (add 2% water, about 20mL per kg) really helps. Fluffs up the husks beautifully which helps with flow. No stuck mashes. Great conversion. With a recirculating system, I don't think there is much need to crush to flour. Non-recirc systems (cooler box or biab) probably do need a finer crush.

Bulldog Brewer V2 On The Way
They are as far as the UK, and will land in Galway next Thursday or Friday. I'm not sure if we can ship them out for delivery next weekend, but if not, then they will get to you early the week after.

We only got 15 this time around and most of them are already sold.

We are really looking forward to having a look at them.

Very clever and they are cheap as chips as well

They're dearer than malt are they not?

Gas burners due here in about 2 weeks.

Will we run out of Bulldog Brewers? That's a hard one to call. There is a limited supply worldwide, but as Obama likes to say: we "punch above our weight" with these and we have had prioritized supply so far.

That's not to say we won't run out; I expect we will come close this month. We should have supply again this year, but its not guaranteed.

What I'd suggest is that you pay a deposit for one. This facility will be gone as soon as they arrive later this week, and I can't reinstate it until I know exactly when the next batch is due in.
