Occured to me today, after Shane and Dan's excellent yeast talk, that we might all have skills or knowledge we could impart via short talks that can take place in between mash time/hop additions etc.

I don't think I'm qualified to teach anyone brewing skills but I could probably give a bit of a talk on pairing beer with food and how to convert people to craft beer without scaring them.

Bonus talk: how to pimp Metalman and flip top bottles.  ;)

Ah yeah I could do that too but I'd say that's more Cara's area of expertise.  :)

In a week or two when I get my Sulphate test kit I'll do a water chemistry demo!

Also can bring in a microscope and look a yeast bonking, having babies, dying etc. Colony counting and Viability estimation and the like!

Also Tom, I don't know if people realise but I'm no expert in science or yeast management etc... I just researched the topic for a write up for the Wiki and did a trial run the day before the TOG brew-day, Dan is the slanting pro.  :)

There is nothing stopping people picking a topic they are interested in, researching it with the aim of doing a write-up and then a talk in TOG when they are finished. You would be surprised the amount of information you would pick up when you spend a week researching a specific topic.  In this way if everyone chose a different topic, we would have a club expert for all the different areas of brewing.  :)

I'll start a list and people can choose a topic they want to do. The idea would be that you would research the "best practice" method of the topic along with as many tips and hints as you can find?

Off flavours
Yeast (Washing, slanting, plating, stir-plates etc...)
Hop growing
Grain mill construction
Water analysis
Water treatment
Mash Tun (Temps, types, construction of mash tuns etc)
Boil Kettle (Types, temps, electrics, construction etc)
Kit Hacking
Mead making
Kombucha making
Wine Making (Red and white)
Temperature control (Enclosures and controllers)
Cider Making
Kegging (Including mini kegs, kegerators etc)
Barrel Aging
Cask beer
Chilling wort (copper chillers, counter flow, ice bath etc)
Etching designs into beer glassware
10 Uses with spent grain (and everyone gets to eat results)

I cant think of any more off the top of my head. Some of these might only be a 10 minute talk others could take hours but you get the idea.

This way everyone can get involved with giving a talk, become more proficient in an area they are interested in and expand the amount of knowledge available on the site. The whole lot could be compiled into a book at the end:

The NHC guide to brewing ;D

Re. The off flavours kits:

There are still some smelly vials in the care of Pardraic (iirc)

However the BJCP site has a d.i.y section about how to make your own Off flavours:

Butyric Acid: (smells like Baby Puke)

First get hold of a new born baby.
2. Induce Vom...

Sorry its supper time but you get my drift!!

I'm happy to help out with more yeast demos, I don't have a lot of time for writing up guides at the moment (but Shane did an excellent job with that!), but I'll contribute what I can on the practical side.

Dr Jacoby

I'll throw my name down for a few of these but it's mostly the practical aspects I can talk about. The science would require some work  ;)

Nice one Peter! There are a few other topics that I know bits about but others would probably be more familiar than me.

I've taken my name off a couple of these. Not enough time in the day. I'll try to get stuck into the remaining topics asap.
