I was asked by pm the following question in relation to the above recipe after plugged into Beersmith. Og and fg is different and how do I account for whirlpooling.

Ok from the outset for a novice BS is tricky to get your head around all the functionality and it's an assumption on here that we all think everybody in fluent in Beersmith, I for one only got the full use out of it 12 months after I bought it and only started using the water profiles last year after the Group buy.

The very first place to start with a recipe like the one above is using the hardware wizard to set up your equipment profile.
In my early days of brewing agenda was to get every last drop out of boil kettle even now I have deck drains but after guidance on here from the likes of Hop Bomb and others why? Overcompensate and leave the crap behind there are only pennies in the difference.
So you need to determine what's left in your boiler or keggle after you have drained everything, do this with water to start and use that as your ref point, so typically 5l for losses but could be up to 8 in a keggle depending on where you have your pickup  let's say 5 though and another 2 litres for fermenter losses.
So what this means is that we have up to 7(2+5) lost in total.
If your target is final 23l required and you boil off normally 5 can be less depending on elements, BS will automatically have you put 35 in the boiler to start.

But wait a minute I'm not hitting those og and fg numbers above?

You don't need to as your system could be more efficient or less efficient.
For the first couple of brews get your eye in, where your efficiency is at, default is 75%, if you increase this you get higher gravity etc.
If you increase your malt you get higher gravity.

Just be wary of putting large amounts of hops in in your first couple of brews.
Plug in the AA of your hops and their age if they are old and you can slide the ibu bar up and down and that automatically changes weights

I always say to nubes BS is like a sat nav it's a great guide but if it asks you to down the wrong way think about it and ask questions here, it's a tremendously powerful tool, but it's only a tool to be used for your benefit.

Thank you for taking the time to write this CH.

This explains it very clearly.   It beats guessing the answer and bashing one ahead.

I went ahead and asked on the All grain forum without seeing this.

I'm gonna start a top tips or tricks for beersmith thread as it is intimidating as feck when you first look at it

I could have done with that a few years back :) I almost gave up on it cos I couldn't work out why my numbers were so out of whack. Then I took another look and worked it out. Thank god!

Please - do set up that "top tips" thread.  I've been holding back on getting BS because I find it so intimidating.  And yet I know that someday soon I have to face reality and use it.

Maybe the best way is to start a thread with questions?
Up to me tits in comp and Brewcon at the moment.
