Lads ye have to post a club, or at least a plan on how you will help out with distribution. This malt is all in Cork.

I'm not a club member for a technical reason, the distance to the nearest club is some 50km, but can pay for diesel or do a bit of driving.

I would check the spec sheet on the malt. Whiskey makers are not chasing flavors just fermentable sugars.

Sure it would be better than adding sugar to a belgian.

...

When are those barrels going to be empty again?

No grain mill so won't be ordering but there's some great beers out there brewed with whisky malt. I used to really like Raftman (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/793) from Unibroue when I lived in Canada.

When I weighed some of the last lot they were in the 10.5 to 11 Kg range.

Defo no chance of expecting to get 13 kg.  They may be weighed by hand/eye but yer man has great eyes!!

You need to order in multiples of 10 kg bags - that way you will get more than expected.

No such thing as 12.5 Kg ( we are not splitting 25 kg bags here!)

If expecting 25 you will probably get 21 at most! To gaurantee at least 25 order 3 bags!

@ Will_D, The flip of this is that I have seen some pretty hefty sacks.

Payment to MCI can be on Gross weight.
If I request it I'm sure we can get a lil' more than less, and charge accordingly.
Final cost we will pro-rata closer to the day.
(Must get batteries for bathroom scale)

@HB, Going to put this in KG to keep things in line, please post if incorrect, thanks!

I think the official weight is 10kg per bag but this varies.

Price is 800€/ton. So we pay 80 cent per kg for what we receive (I think).

More or less.
EUR 10 gets you about 12.5kg
Bags are small, about half a regular sack.

Can someone explain the difference between ale malt and stout malt.
Why is one better suited to one style than the other?

Stout malt has a higher diastatic power (in laymans speak: more enzymes to convert non-diastatic malts and adjuncts) which have high levels of starch.

is that it ? - it is just a pale malt right ?  does the quote above mean it has a higher efficency ? trying to think of the  non-diastatic malts and adjuncts it would convert  - but roast malt would not have anything to ocnvert anyway - I guess oats and stuff ?

could this be used for regular ales ?

Lads,

I am getting ready to close this one.
I was speaking to MCI, they are keen to do 25kg bags where possible, it cuts their handling/hassle/cost.
IF you MUST have 12.5kg bags please let me know ASAP.
If this translates to a saving, its going into the club.
I will PM a list of final price and bank details once I am sorted with MCI.
At your discretion, add EUR1 per order and this will go to the club too.

I am going to round weights below to the nearest 25Kg or 12.Kg
Please reply and correct if anything looks incorrect
I will summarise [EDITS] below.

Thanks,
John

Jeez I just can't resist a calculation:

By my reckoning so far it weighs in at about 1.4 tonnes!

I reckon there are 111 12.5 bags ordered!

Someone will need a BIG truck!!

Just a heads up!!

We'll run this for a fortnight,
Sunday 21st - Final Orders

Delivery needs to be managed per club, I can hold some grain for a time ex Cork or Midleton.
Please note your club afilliation when ordering or nearest town.
Payment on 22nd/23rd please.
I am not doing this for any profit but will do my best to see that this runs as efficiently as possible.

Name, Club(or town), grain

1. johnrm, Rebel Brewers, 25 Ale, 25 Stout, 12.5 lager, 12.5 distillers

Unfortunately the day job requires some catch-up to account for me covering the NHC Stand on Friday.
I have sent the complete order to MCI, I expect a response but will have more time/space to chase tomorrow.

Bear in mind also that there is 1.5tons of grain to move around and only a few hands up offering to shift this to we are into a bit of an unknown. Worst case, there may be a need to get a 3rd party to move it.

Hi Tube,

I reached out the guys on the North side initially as there was nobody on the South side involved in this at the time. Now I see that there are some other involved will get in touch with them to see what the story is.  I will contact the others in the Capital Brewers and South to see if they are interested or can facilitate a group collection/distribution.

Just in passing combined the Dublin brewers (e.g. North, Central and South) between them are taking 325 kg of grain. If you add in the Liffey Brewers 137.5 kilograms then you nearly have a 1/2 metric ton. Not sure many cars would hold either.

Regards,

Shanna

Hi lads,
Have the van organised for one afternoon on a day of our choice (weekdays). Thanks to my boss. I can move the load from Cork to Dublin. I'm free after 2pm. We have to cover the cost of diesel and tolls (if any) and I promissed Ger good few samples from everybody. No home deliverys please just transport fom A to B. As I have to get some sleep and work next morning.
Ideas and comments welcome.

Hi Alealex

I am offering to collect and distribute to Central and South Dublin brewers. Will pay my share of tolls and fuel costs plus provide some home brew samples. Would it be possible to arrange a delivery to a city centre location for myself and north County dublin brewers to collect from? Would be looking to collect and redistribute that evening as I don't have facilities to store so much grain securely.

If your okay my suggestion I will get in touch with other Dublin based brewers to get the logistics sorted out.

Plan so far is to go from Carlow> Cork> Roscrea> Dublin> Carlow (some 600km, 80-90 ltrs diesel, 4 tolls)
Is Galway/Mayo ok with collection from Roscrea?
How about Waterford area?
Cheers.

As the van is passing right by kildare enroute to Dublin, I can take my own and Liffey brewers. Lucan is awkward to get to.
Im just one minute from the motorway by van.  Can have a cup of coffee and a sambo waitin for alex.  If that suits?
Ill take liffey grain to the next meet in a few weeks if thats any good with the Liffey lads? Unless the liffey lads have another arrangement.

yep Ponaire.. Limerick shipping at a fiver makes it expensive if u only want a bag or two but me a a few mates buy a hundred quid at a time and free shipping.. that keeps us saving shipping and keeping our coffee arriving fresh on a weekly or forthnightly basis.
Superb coffee...roasted to order arrives at your door in the post nxt day.  Costa rica blend is our favorite

One of the guys Eoin had offered to store the delivered grain.  He lives in Tyrrelstown in North West Dublin. Is this okay with you for doing the delivery or would you prefer a city centre delivery point?

Hi johnrm

Just a few questions on payment/dates

How will you collect the money?
When do you intend to collect the grain and when do you needed to be paid by?
Can we assume all types of grain are €20?

I would suggest that whatever the transport costs are that they are split in proportion to the amount of grain someone buys. E.g. if I buy 100 kg of grain from a total of 1000kg I should pay 1/10th of the local transport costs. Just in passing I am getting 75kg of grain. This probably will only work for the initial hop from mci to your place as the other transport is more complicated.
