What are the Wine categories?

1.Wine

Don't forget big descriptive please

Deemon147

Hi All,

New to homebrew competitions but will enter this year one or two for the constructive criticism if anything.

Just wondering for the entries, how beneficial is filling out everything in the Optional Information section or is this for brewers records only?

Leann ull

You don't need to unless there is a special ingredient that you want the judge to know about

Bubbles

I'm open to correction on this but I think the description field is only enabled for certain styles?

I really think there should be at least 2 categories as was suggested in earlier postings:

W1: Kit wines (based on grape concentrates)

W2: Country Wines (based on fruit and veg which would include real grapes)

If enough entries are received in W1 then split into white and red.

Reason that last years wine entries was sparse was a lack of info re. the fact that was a wine competion!

The reason there is only one category is because it's primarily a beer competition, that is judged to a consistent standard year on year.
We have no judging criteria for wine other that the professional vendors we used historically who all felt that the standard from the 2 or 3 entries we received each year wasn't high enough to merit a gold medal.
There will be medals available again this year
It just doesn't make sense to start creating subcategories for single digit number of entries.
We are the National Homebrew Club and our Competition does facilitate wine or any other legally homebrewed item, if the entry has a sufficiently high enough standard and the entrants expansive descriptive corresponds to what the judges are tasting then you will win a medal you don't need subcategories to do that.

Note that applies to all descriptives:
Where you do decide to use a descriptive try to put yourself in the judges shoes, they will be really helped with comments about unusual adjuncts or methods used rather than nice stories or history lessons about the style as I have seen a number of times :(

Some descriptives I read a few years back really helped though
"'My beer is infected but I think gives it a edge like a sour"

bachus

"Creamy, butter's fragrant aroma and aftertaste - it's not a diacetyl bug , it's a feature".
Dominik (bachus)

molc

I aim for the essense of green Apple in all my beers;)
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

@CH:

"The reason there is only one category is because it's primarily a beer competition"

Then why have we all the mead categories?

If we want to grow the Home Brewing aspect of the club the makinh home wine makers the pariahs is not very condusive.

We are the National Homebrew Club after all not just the "Irish confederation of amateur beer makers 9not to forget cider and mead)"

Would more categories bring more people in? I understand that we had <10 entries for the past years, so no need for breaking down...

How many entries did we get for ciders and mead?
