Co2 Delivery in Dublin (not AJ Edge)

I am interested to hear from those in Dublin  and surrounding areas where they get here gas from if not from AJ Edge? Does anyone use a refill service and if so which one?

The reason I ask is that with my new job, new house and lack of car, it's getting increasingly difficult for me to get down to Bray during with week for a refill.
I know Motley Brew used to do them but with that closing at the end of next month..I don't have many options.

From my reconning, I'm paying €10 + €30 for hire car + time off work to get to AJ. Where as I'd rather pay €50 per refill and get it delivered. Don't mind renting a tank and selling my old one.

Anyone use such a service? Or is it just worth ringing around fore extinguisher companies and asking them?

One one final side note, if all I could get was a rental co2 fire extinguisher, how easy would it be to modify for brewing? Is this out of the standard reach of the DIY homebrewer for good reason.

Looking forward to some thoughts on this.

I think most people are in the same boat and I'm not sure of where else it can be done. I'm lucky in that I work in Leopardstown so Bray can be done during lunch

Where are you based? Often folks in our club will take other people's tanks with them to AJ so that might be an idea

Loads of lads use modified fire extinguishers. I've never tried it myself but others can help out

Thanks

Or depot deliver them, have to buy a new tank first and then pay for refills afterwards. Haven't used them myself but it's an option. https://www.iedepot.ie/food-beer-grade-co2-6.35kg/

Based in DNS ( da Nort' Side D9) now and work in central.

I have looked at iedepot. For a 2L tank (1.5kg content) €75 + 20 for new tank full, deposit and haz mat delivery. €19 + €20 for delivery and top up. That is fairly reasonable and I'm willing to pay that.

If I had the skills and know how, I would love to get a 14L tank and filling kit and do refills for home brewers. Just charge enough to break even on the costs and have a full tank. And be open on a Saturday ;)

I've been watching videos online and it seems more than doable. There's a big gap in the market it that's for certain.
I will do the rounds on a few fire extinguisher companies and see what the score is.

So had a bit of luck today from an unusual source.....it turns out BOC are now doing personal accounts, you can register online and go for a delivery option or refill with a local reseller.

The good thing with this is that they have a lot of agents based around Ireland. I found one round the corner from me in Glasnevin.

Anyways it's a 6.5kg(contents) tank so a 20lb, of CO2 for €18 ex vat a refill..the admin rental is €5 a month.

That tank would last me a year easy (providing unfortunate no leaks) for €100.

To get that volume I would have had to have topped up my tank X 5 plus the transport costs to AJ and time off work getting would be well in excess of what BOC is offering.

This seems like a solid option to go for. When I spoke to them on the phone they said they don't do home bars to individuals because of insurance, but what I think they mean by this is that they want you to have public liability insurance if they think you are serving to the public. Anyways I said I was a hobbiest and didn't mention homebrew or bar and they said that was fine.

So there that's a great option for others in the same predicament as me. I hope to pickup next week and will report back on how easy it was.

I got my 20kg tank from Hobbyweld, same idea as BOC but no monthly rental, €60 deposit (fully refundable) and €30 refill. This lad is in Newry, had to go that route as I couldn't get from Dundalk to Bray during the week

DO you still need your own regulator if your renting, or do they come with one?

Would love if there was somewhere on the Northside. Had a leak in a quick disconnect so my tank drained really fast. Had to take a few hours off work on Monday to go over to Bray, factor in 10 euro on tolls and diesel and the time off work it does add up. probably cant justify the 5 euro rental from BOC. How long would a tank of Co2 from AJ Edge usually last, not sure as I've just started kegging a few months ago? I got a keg and a half out of my last one because of the leak.

I get a refill every couple of years and I force carb everything - I'd say you'll get 30-40 kegs out of a tank.

This is in Glasnevin. It is ProWeld who act as as an agent for BOC. But you have to have a BOC account to order. It's literally 5 mins ride away from my house. Still only open weekdays 9-5 but I can get up there just after 9am, collect and get into work for just after 10am without anyone noticing.

I checked online but the only places available are in Tallaght or Westmeath  and I can't do that because I'm without a car.

Doing the sums, I'd rather get one big tank for a monthly rental (and hope to god I don't get any leaks) just for the shear convenience of only having to do it once and it being 5 mins away. I can even pay for delivery to the house if needs be. That should last me well over a year, where as I would be spending a lot of time / days off / petrol getting my 2kg tank filled up in Bray.

OK so an update. Registered with BOC on Monday (very easy and straightforward to deal with) filled out the forms and emailed them back. Account confirmed Tuesday and I popped upto ProWeld that evening before the closing and picked up a 6.5kg  tank no bother). It's fitted with some form of restricter plate / valve  which limits the output to 200PSI (according to their spec sheet) so will keep an eye on the weight to measure capacity and might even switch the valve off during periods of inactivity just to be sure.

Fast carbed via the old shake method and set it at 10 PSI. I am now enjoying my first brew in over 3 months (praise the lord).

Overall, was very impressed. I was always under the impression BOC don't do non-commercial accounts but they must have lifted this. Less than 24 hours from initial enquiry to drinking beer. Plus its done via Direct Debit so works out at only €7 a month for the year (possibly less if this tank lasts me).

Obviously this pales in comparison if you can nip to AJ for a top up, but like I mentioned previously, once you factor in time off work / transport costs (if no car) etc filling up a 2kg 2/3 times a year it works out cheaper and more convenient. Have a check here for local agents and speak to them, they might leave it took around the back if you need to collect it on a Saturday and as you have already paid for it they might not care too much.

Hope this helps some people.

Not sure about ProWeld, give their Dublin branch a call directly.

BOC do HazMat delivery for €40 which again if you factor in a big tank last the whole year isn't too much of a price to pay.
