Sherlock Holmes here:

This really sounds like someone in a brewery Eff'd up major:

Either the farmer was ordering spent grains in repacked in original malt bags (have seen this in numerous small brweries) and some gombeen put in a load of fresh malt by mistake

or the famrmer was ordering fresh malt (unlikely unless he's a mega home brewer) and the said gombeen threw in some bags of spent grain.

Err, Obvious question: Ask the farmer WHAT he ordered!!
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Only interested in the Crystal malt if it's there, would need to know that before making the trip. ;D

That was my reading of the situation as well.  The farmer had only ordered brewers grain as cattle feed, and so did not know what to do with it when it arrived, had it dropped off by a fella he buys from regularly and did not notice the difference until he went to use it.

Greg2013, you'll have to rely on johnrm to inform you on whats left there now.  There's a good chance he has it as he has over 30 bags left.

It looked all right, I picked up a bag of each.
The Crystal looked a bit damp on the bottom, haven't opened it yet, worst case I'll decant out to a bucket and dump anything that looks off.
Yer man said to come back and need replace any that were bad.
I would have taken more MO but I've limited storage. I need to do bigger favors for Billy!

Hello guys

I'd be interested in two bags of 25kg whole pale malt maris otter blend. But I am based in Dublin and can't drive... If anybody is getting some up, I'd be interested!

Just a little question, my room is around 60% humidity, would the whole malt last two months in there as long as I don't put it through the grain mill?.. ???

Thanks

I grabbed some bags with John. The wheat and munich were fine but the marris otter had clumped moldy patches.
I dumped about 5kg of MO in total so far, might dump the rest.
HBC have 25kg bags of pale malt for €25 at the moment. I'd play it safe and get this instead.

This is all very pot luck so a risk to people who are not local as there is a cost in shipping.

After what LE has reported about the MO, I'm going to err on the side of caution and pull out. Sorry, but I hope you understand.

Thanks everyone for all the to-ing and fro-ing and for all the communications.

Maybe next time.

Cheers,

Aye very true.  I've finally got hold of what I had brought up and although it all looks fine at present, I'm going to go through each bag over the next couple of days.  I'll empty them out in a big tub to check for mold or grain beetles and then rebag them and sew them up again.  Although it seems to be mostly the Maris Otter blend bags that have caused problems so far the one I opened tonight was fine. Biscuity smell off it, and the grains I tasted were all firm.
