Hi there

Had the same issue last night but using leaf hops. Is it practical to use a small brewing bag to contain the hops in the boiler or do the have to be loose? I can't help thinking the hops should be squeezed to extract the absorbed wort or is this likely to impart of flavours in the beer.

Right, that's it done. Cleanup, the lot.

I don't want to see another grain of malt or hop pellet for a month!!  ;) :D

Having said that, I really enjoyed doing the brews and constantly tweeting about it. Two batches are in the fermenter, quietly foaming. Black as soot. And you know what's funny? When I open the fermenter to smell this 10% roasty malt monster? All I can smell is those EKG hops! It's a hop-monster of a stout!

Huge props to Shiny for that 3-batch brew day, and to Shanna for building that AG system of his under extreme pressure and time constraints. It can't have been easy. Let's take a few days off now and worry about the barrel transfer later in the week..  ;D

A bag is a good way around it. Apparently it decrees utilization though.

Shanna

What you loose in utilisation you would gain in being able to fish it out in one go and properly drain it without having to wait till it cools.

It is bitterness that you lose not counting the wort.

Got delayed over the weekend cause the sister was home from Canada, but there is 20l @ 1.090 in the fermenter now  ;D. Think I drain the mash tun a bit fast cause I used less grain then I planed and still had about 5l of 1.040 in it when I was cleaning it.

Shane Phelan

Thanks for the update Ronan. I just put your volume into the summary thread there now. That brings us up to ~158L in fermenters now, still waiting on a few others but its looking good so far!

How did you get on with the mash?

mash was not too bad, did not think i would be able to fit all of grain listed in so planned on using 7kg marris otter, fired in the roasted grains first to balance out the temp then stated to chuck the MO in.  mash tun looked full and was getting thick before i got it all in, think i only used 6 - 6.5 MO.  was not to worried as i had a bit of DME about.
as it turned out did not need as it looked like i hit the target but threw some in at the end just in case, cause i could not clearly see the reading.

when i was draining the mashtun after it looks like the extra hours rest got me another 5-10l of 1.040 was kicking myself i could not find the small fermenter cause i would have put on a 2nd small batch.

was a lot easier then expected but your right i would consider a better spoon/paddle next time. not i just have to figure out what im going to do with 9kg of grain  :D

Hi there

Guys want to get the details of the collection/delivery of beers sorted out this week.  Please Pm me to organise and confirm this. Best time for delivery is after 8:30pm. For those of you I promised to collect from Shiny and Beerfly I think I propose Tuesday night will collect both on the same night.

Shanna

Ps: Correction changed collection night to Tuesday and mcgrath to beerfly.

What sort of time were you thinking on Wednesday? The ICB meet is on the same night but I can leave early.

Hi Tube

Was only planning on collecting the beer from Shiny during the week so I changed the offer of collection to Tuesday as I want to collect from beerfly on the same run. Plan is to fill the barrel over the holiday weekend.

I will be in town on Wednesday evening, driving. Want to get my syphon from Irish_goat and Saaz pellets from yourself Shane, if possible. So I could collect you from the B&C if you like? Don't mind bringing you to Declan's place on my way home if that helps?

What's the plan finish fermenting in secondary and tip what date?
This week is totally out for me :( but can collect for SCD barrel next week.

Shane Phelan

Hi Tube, thanks for the offer for the lift but it seems it sorted now with Declan in terms of doing it on Tuesday. I will bring your Saaz with me on Wednesday evening and I can give them to you when you are meeting Irish Goat?

Declan, Tuesday is fine for me, I'm transferring both batches into secondary on Sunday night so there shouldn't be much trub/yeast to get stirred up en route. If they have finished higher than 1.025 I will add some yeast nutrient when transferring so in that case they might have started fermenting again...hopefully it wont come to that.  ;)

They are going to be resting for a week in yours aren't they?
