As an aside; What are the criteria for successful long term storage of malted WHOLE grains?

I asked a similar question when collecting grain from MCI. If you can store it in an air tight drum, at a coolish temperature, it should last for years.

13 x 25kg whole wheat munich malt

I'm curious what this is. Is it munich malt or wheat malt?

I'm operating on what the farmer has told me, hopefully I'll get photos of the bags today with more detail. I thought munich malt was always wheat though?

So the waste grain goes off and gets dried out again?

It's one of the byproducts of the distilling and brewing trade and there's a huge agri-feed aftermarket in what's called moist animal feed, brewers' grain, distillers' grain, brewers' yeast for cattle farming.

On the transport/delivery front I have priced pallet collection and delivery for 500kg at E42.84 ex-VAT from Co. Cork to Dublin 9.  Were we to go down that route we'd have to figure out how to get payment in advance to the farmer and would have no opportunity to view the stock.  Also we would have to verify he has a pallet on hand or get an extra quote for pallet and wrapping from the courier.  The farmer himself would drive to Dublin if we took the lot, if given a consideration for diesel, wear and tear and tolls.

I don't have a problem holding it for a few days but I'd probably be sleeping on top of it near the ceiling at that rate, would other members have more storage space?  I'd be willing to be on hand in Dublin, possibly with a mate to unload and stack the bags.

I would be interested in taking a bag of each please

Ok folks, here are a couple of scenarios:

A) There is a possibility that I can get down to Glanmire either Sunday (tomorrow) or Monday and pick up what has been requested so far and drive it up to Dublin to a pre-arranged drop-off point.

Regarding transportation, the cost of diesel & tolls will have to be factored into the cost of the bags, given 80L of diesel would prob be E112/28 bags would be an extra E4/bag.  80L diesel is quoted there as I am in Galway at present and would be driving down to Cork, then onto Dublin which is 526km, plus my friend whose car I would be using would expect a bit of diesel to help him on his way back to Galway i.e. another 220km so 746k in total. [we'd be doing well to do it on that amount too]

B) That price exceeds the E100 quoted by the farmer himself to come up to Dublin, but in that case a meet point must be designated and members there to make payment and distribute.  It also gives no opportunity to inspect the grain and see what its like.

Who here can store the members grain for distribution?  Can the mods/members who've participated let me know how payment works for group buys here?

I thought Munich malt was made from Barley? Please correct me if I'm wrong but clearly Wheat Malt and Munich Malt are not the same thing.

** EDIT ** OK guys, I am based in Cork, I called the farmer and plan to meet him tonight. He told me he has Wheat malt AND Munich (also Maris Otter). Assuming he has no objections I will take some pictures and post them up here. Again assuming there are no objections from here I'll probably take 2 bags of wheat and 1 Maris Otter. I'll confirm what I have taken this evening.

The Jolley brewer

Would take 1 bag MO,1 bag Munich and I bag of cyrstal

I went to the farm tonight and picked up 1 x MO and 1 x Wheat. The farmer was easy to deal with and had no problem with me looking at the stock or taking pictures. Unfortunately I didn't open the bags until I got home. The wheat was clean, crunchy and delicious. However the Maris Otter was not just rancid, it looked more like compost than grain. I suspect the bag was exposed to rain or something. I quickly removed it from my home and called him, he had no problem with me coming back during the week for a replacement. Looking back there were a couple of tell tale signs, a small amount of tiny creatures crawling on the bag, the bag seemed more full than the wheat (swollen due to moisture), the bag was also a little dirty.

Another thing to note is the manufacture & expiry dates are printed on the bags. They seem to vary between expiring Sep 2014 and Feb 15. I took some pictures which can be seen here https://www.dropbox.com/sc/10xf1s04ao2c6ot/AAB-3aotMULjykKvDnjJLpR-a

The lads are up North cannot afford to have dud malt shipped.
Have we any way of checking the condition?
Is this stuff just sitting in a farm shed?
What were the tiny creatures? bugs or rats?
Do you recognise any here?...

From memory I couldn't be sure of the exact species maybe some kind of beetle. I can take a picture tomorrow presumably there's plenty in the bag which is currently sitting in my bottle wheelie bin outside. As the wheat looks so good in comparison I suspect the bag went off due to moisture rather than being attacked. Unless perhaps the barley grain is more attractive to them than the wheat grain.

The bags are stored in a farm shed as pictured.

BTW The spec can be found here http://www.muntons-inc.com/craft-brewery-products/

Also added 2 more pictures showing the label on the wheat bag and showing the grain. I'm finding tasting it a little addictive which must be a good sign :)

LordEoin

swolen compost shed floor bug grain doesn't sound so good, so at this stage I'm backing out.
