Garden hose disconnects for €1 in homestore and more. Always handy to have
Lidl have/will have them in brass for €6 as did Aldi
Excellent.
Picked up a 12L stockpot in aldi for €24.99 it says it's induction hob compatible so I'm assuming it's stainless steel. it'll be handy for steeping grains or heating up water.
Where?
In Aldi, it seems to be part of the hurry while stock lasts, as I can't find it on their website, I got mine in Cork and there were a few left.
Shite, I probably wont get to Aldi soon enough.
Can we keep this to just alerting people, just to keep it on topic, I probably come off as a pedantic pat, don't mean to. I know by posting this I'm breaking the suggested rule.......help I'm trapped in a paradox

Worth asking if it has the freezer drawer though, or most fermenters and corny's wont fit in. Depends what you want it for..
My main doubt with those fridges is always whaterver they would fit a 30lt fermenter or not :(

Triple heated stir plate for 1/10th its cost price. Its a bit OTT, but stir plates are expensive and don't come up too often second hand:

Well done, you can grow enough yeast to supply the whole club with that thing.. actually you could take out the heating elements and stick them to the bottom of your boiler..haha!
Just be careful about using the "heat" function! These lab stirrers can often get up to 350C or more and the regulation is not great!
So don't try to set 22C for a yeast starter - you may well cook it!

Hoping to call to Ikea soon so was having a look at their website and saw these new jars, http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/90315048/ (http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/90315048/). They look perfect for storing yeast, and a euro cheaper than those Kilner ones in homestore and more/woodies.
What about their own (even cheaper) 0.5l Kilner version for €1 http://m.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/art/70213545/
I've one of these & should be fine for yeast.
The bigger sizes are only €2.25, €3.00, €3.75 for 1L, 1.8L & 2L.
I had one of those, if fact I bought four of the kilner ones when they were on sale at one stage, but when I put yeast in one after a brew, mould grew on the rubber seal(after sterilizing). my thinking is that the lip of the jar is covered completely with the crew on lids and would hopefully prevent that in the future.

True true, just warning people. I just bought one 😉
I have one of those termapen style thermometers as well. They're decent.
Guys I did look at the Nisbetts temp probes before I pulled the trigger on a Thermopen, but for the extra €30 I was getting more accuracy and a quicker reading, I'm sure they are fine, but they are not the same. I think the Hygiplas like the thermopen also comes with a calibration cert?

I bought on of the E20 IR Thermometers in Aldi.
Accuracy is +/1 1.5C or something.
Hmmm...
@Will or Pheel.
That sealers looks good. I need one and am just ready to buy it.
But can it vacuum seal other (non-brand) bags or rolls? I see that it seems to employ to own-brand bags are channelled or something. Does it make and difference what bags are used in your experience?
Thanks!
You have to use bags designed to be vac sealed. They have channels in the inside surface that alow the air to be removed.
They will seal ordinary bags but will not pull a good vacuum.
You can buy vac bags from others sources online, maybe cheaper, maybe not!
Right. I meant to specify that I was talking about vacuum sealer bags. I have loads of the rolls left over from the crappy lidl sealer. They're designed to work with that one, so they are vacuum sealer bags. I don't see any channelling on them; should it be visible or otherwise detectable?
Anyway, I guess you've answered my main question. If I get this sealer I won't be stuck with just one brand of possibly price vac seal bags. Cool, thanks for the tip.

Same here, picked up a smaller one that will fit my space for the same price (but haven't had the time to fit it yet)... when I looked at the cost of a new one or even getting the steel to make one, it was some difference, easily a couple of hundred euros in materials alone.

Used this malt a while back with a 60 minute boil.... WON'T be making that mistake again!
I had read a few bit and pieces about how the way grain is malted these days eliminates the need for a 90 minute boil even with pilsener malt, but this malt gave off a bad dose of DMS. It was an otherwise decent beer.
A good while back its switched to 90 min boils for all my beers.
As far as DMS goes I've never found any.
It's good practice and would recommend it.

Usually you would be looking at an SMM (S- Methyl Methionine) ( which is the DMS precursor ) typical value of 2-6 mg/kg for a lager malt, with the lower the value the better
Specs are:
http://www.homebrewwest.ie/viking-2-row-pilsner-malt-28-to-45-ebc-25-kg-5558-p.asp
Specifications:
moisture % max 5.0
extract fine % dm min 81
colour °EBC 2.8 – 4.5
protein % dm max 11.7
soluble nitrogen mg/100 g malt 620 – 800
free amino nitrogen mg/l min 130
b-glucans mg/l max 250
Other analytical information
pH 5.8 – 6.1
saccharification min max 15
viscosity mPas max. 1.60
friability % min 78
degree of fermentation app. % min. 80
diastatic power WK dm min 240
By the way Flanagan thanks for the tip on the boil length!!
Thanks Cruiscinlan unfortunately the SMM value is not listed, this value would give a better indication of expected DMS, if the value is low you would need to look elsewhere for the cause of DMS, eg vigour and time of boil as already mentioned, plus cooling time at the end of the Boil.
Just to add a bit of detail since some of you took an interest.
It was Viking 2 Row Pilsener Malt making up 89% of grain bill.
It was a good thorough rolling boil for 60 mins, I have an electric urn and the pre boil vol was about 15-16L.
It was cooled to 20C or so in about 40 mins. You know the story, about 15mins to get it down to 35-40 then longer for the last 15 degrees or so.
I knew it was DMS, the old tin of corn, but I brought it into a brewday in Galway Bay a few weeks and the dude (Fursey I think) confirmed DMS, with also a little bit of yeast strain. Otherwise I think it would have been a nice beer, 5% belgian blonde job. I have been drinking it but I'm sick of it now, just can't get past that DMS...
Hi Flanagan
This was no critique on your brewing technique just some background info regarding smm levels in wort and their impact on DMS you are right in that Lagers are better boiled for 90 minutes due to the lower level of colour required during malting/kilning but if this malt stands out it would be nice to see the SMM value to compare

Not so great with garden hose though especially the cheaper hoses as they tend to cause the hose to split. I have found the plastic connectors better over the long term.

2. Just to confirm - I am using plastic fermenters very occasionally. I am big fan of the glass demijohns/carboys. Plastic fermenters are great for cultivating mold and other microorganisms. All small scratches are perfect for bacteria/microorganisms and sanitation/cleaning process is not always killing all of them. .
Plastic fermenters are cost effective as long as you use a soft cloth to to clean them.
Glass carboys are more of a pain to clean. I haven't bothered with glass for over a year. Also they make a lot more mess if you drop them while full (got the t-shirt!!)
Technique for cleaning and carrying have you not seen my patent pending process?
Handle is essential but only for steering not load bearing

I wonder what's unique and patentable about their plastic bucket?
the krausen collar and tap design
what's a krausen collar?
it's a removable collar between the main bucket and the lid.
It gives extra head space for fermentation.
Then once the krausen dies down you can remove the collar, reducing the headspace and removing the krausen ring.

I've recently started pumping from MT through an old spider very similar to the GB ones from Bridgwater and I'm amazed even using herms how much "fluff" I catch going into the boiler so something like this would be ideal, hot side aeration is a Homebrewers myth btw boiling for an hour takes care of any oxygen in any case
Would this induction hob from Aldi be any way useful?
https://www.aldi.ie/en/specialbuys/hurry-while-stocks-last/hurry-while-stocks-last/ps/p/single-induction-hob-2/
Yep I use one like that for sparge water. I normally start it up 30 minutes before sparge o'clock
would an induction hob like that be enough to boil (say) 15L of wort in a stockpot. Under pressure to "take it outside, beerboy" - I considered a gas ring but I'd need to keep a spare cyclinder on hand and gas is expensive (and really inefficient if it's in any way windy).
I boiled 28 litres of wort on my 3kw buffalo induction hob last week. Works a treat.

at the price of the Buffalo hob, I'd probably be looking at one of these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271824440789) instead (it's out of stock at the moment, hence the ridiculous price. normally about £120).
boiling calculator here (https://www.easycalculation.com/physics/thermodynamics/water-boiling-time-calculator.php) suggests 49 minutes to get 15L from 15C to boiling @ 2kW (assuming 90% efficiency) - that's pretty slow, though I'm not sure how long it takes on my kitchen (gas) hob currently
I got my buffalo hob as a referb unit on eBay. Works perfectly and only cost me about 130 euro. I had the ss brewtech kettle which is induction ready so it was a no brainer. The aldi one should be able to handle 15 litres though... That was the point of my post.

assuming it comes out of the tap @ 15C... 15-->66 (mash) 66-->100 (boil).
Actually that's probably not much slower than my hob, takes the best part of half an hour to get to mash temp, and then what seems like forever to get to a rolling boil; I'd say it is the best part of an hour in total.
Yea it's definitely not the fastest. I have my kettle wrapped in reflectix which you can't do on gas which is a plus! I think I got 20 litres from 18 to 68 degrees in about 20 mins give or take a few mins. I wasn't watching very closely.

I started using this hob recently. 14L of Water from 20C to 70C in 25 minutes. 70C to Boiling in 20 minutes. This is with a stainless steel stock pot wrapped with insulation.
For me the point may be moot - just checked my stockpot and it's only very slightly magnetic so I don't think it would work with induction.

Looks far more impressive in the photo than in reality. You cannot even recalibrate it (mine was 2℃ off) and you cannot change the batter. It lasted a week before it stopped working. Very poor build quality. It looks and feels like a cheap Chinese knock-off of a better thermometer which is what I should have bought in the first place. My advice is to spend more on something you will be able to rely upon.

You say that but there's a good chance it won't. I mean by the time you add the three purchases together and include shipping you might have well have bought one Thermopen....
I've had about 4-5 shit thermometers, the thermopen is where I'm at now
An industry calibrated thermometer is an investment. Clubs should invest in one and people can calibrate their thermometers to it. Or for the price of the one posted, get your own.
A badly calibrated thermometer be the difference in a beer finishing at 1.010 or 1.015. BIG difference in final product.

Thats the mistake I made.
I bought a meat probe from argos http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/9013775/Trail/searchtext%3ETHERMOMETER.htm which goes a bit nuts when steam hits it.
one of these.. complete waste of time.

And a regular brewing glass thermometer from brewing shops. Not great..
I don't really trust any of them and now use one of my stc1000. And I have no confidence in that either.
I really hope this is the end of my wows...
Picked up a thermapen just now. Hard to resist at that price.
After all that I've just ordered one :D
Commercially you just buy a calibrated thermometer per year.
Why?
Coz: its cheaper than having one recalibrated and certified in '.dubland'
The older ones are then relegated to "secondary standards/use" and are cross calibrated to the one that is "in cert"

I have one. Not very accurate but handy for when cooling starters.
Mmmm... I keep adding them and unadding them to my Amazon basket. Just can't justify replacing my wee probe thermometer. It's quick, accurate and has survived years of rough treatment.
- Barry
I got a cheap one from China and it was out a degree and now one I have from Amazon is 0.5
Even at a degree as Nigel says for watching starter wort temps or temps at the end of a boil for pitching to stop you having to insert your "wee probe" which may introduce something that shouldn't be there.
I'll get one and post a comparison vs what I have vs Thermo pen
They only check the temperature at the surface of a liquid surely?
Yep, but the top surface is usually the hottest part by a degree or 2.
I just have a probe in the boil the entire time to control the Pwm, so use that to tell me when it's cooled to temp. Why get infrared when you can overspend om your boiler setup
I have a 3 inch blichman dial and it's less that useless
I have a dial in my mash tun and yeah it's useless which is why I shrink the infrared ones are useless too as they only check the temperature of a localised area. I use a thermometer from Nisbet which is the dogs
you can take a couple of measurements around your boiler and the difference will be a degree of 2, enough to know its ok to pitch
also monitor ferment temps without sticking things in or having to open the bucket or carboy
Boring Science Alert!
These IR thermometers measure emitted radiation.
So what says you?
Consider two saucepans:
One is a black cast iron/black aluminium pot.
T'other is a shinny stainless yoke.
Both are at the same temperature(like filled with boiling water - just off the boil).
The dark pot will read higher that the shinny ss pot.
Expensive IR thermometers have an Emissivity input to compensate!
I noticed these 5 litre Pet Food Storage containers reduced to clear at €1:99 in Homestore and More. When I opened them to check there was a strong chemical/plastic smell. It would probably dissipate over time. They might suit for storing speciality grains, but I'd bag them before storing them in these.

i have one and realized it was crap too.
but it does come in handy for gettting a rough idea of how close you are to a boil.
They are really for only measuring the surface of something. It won't read the center of the water. The surface could naturally be cooler/warmer.
I bought one a year or two ago. Have never used it. It's in the Aliexpress drawer of regret

The other one I have from China is accurate to 0.2-0.5 across the range, measure against a thermopen before you write it off O0
Feic yez all I should have lets yez all buy it. :P
To repeat myself these are great for measuring cooled starters to avoid thermal shock, heat rises so thats the hottest part, you will get an accurate reading from wort, no use for hlt.
Equally before I pour into carboy I want to make sure I'm at pitch temp, I can measure with out sticking anything in it or dripping into it, I've seen pics of some of you fellas brewing, it aint pretty

Doesn't stand up to too much bashing around when moving/storing your gear.

What size pot do you use on that? It looks great but I feel like I wouldn't be able to balance my brew kettle on her.
I use a 19L/ 32cm Pot on it. There's enough of the pot base on the plate for it to function. For BIAB method I used on Friday, 14.5L of wort from Mash to Boil in a little over 15 minutes (insulated pot). The good thing about this specific plate is the power is set by a knob from off-full power; so I had a timer set for the plate to turn on long enough to reach mash-in temp for when I arrived home from work. Most induction plates seem to switch on to a menu screen which is no good to pre set a mash temp easily.

Cam Lock Fittings: I tried for a long time to get realistic prices for Part A and Part C Cam Lock fittings in Ireland but the best couldn't beat the prices being offered by Brew Builder in Bristol, UK. I just got delivery and at the equivalent of €3.55 for Part A and €5.90 for Part C the saving was significant. I used Address Pal to get them from the UK at lowest cost - total €11.70 - but Brew Builder will post direct to Ireland at a slightly higher cost.
They also have a good price on Silicone tubing. 12mm ID X 21mm OD Platinum Cured Silicone Hose at a little over €5 per Meter.
I used keg kingdom for my part a £2.6 0 b £4.50 d £4.80 f £2.00 I got the big part c's from brewbuilder , they were both tag along items on an order and postage for both was around the €10 mark. http://www.kegkingdom.co.uk/collections/cam-lock-disconnect-fittings
Yep he has expanded his range alright, don't touch his type c's though they really restrict flow, other vendors have open bore options.
The (w)hole point about bsp sizes is the Bore size.
So a 1/2" bsp screwed pipe will have a bore of 1/2" and an od of approx 20+ mm
So 1/2 camlock fittings should all allow a 1/2" test finger into the bore!
When it comes to hose tails it is a different story. A 1/2" cam lock hose tail should also have a bore of 1/2" and to allow for this (the tail will be about 22m od) you will need silicon tubing of approx 22mm id!.
HTH Will
The issue as I see it with hose tails is there's no point in investing in a centre inlet chugger which has a 3/4 " thread and trying to feed this through a hose tail with a 3/8 " id bore. It's asking for cavitation problems, and can be a root cause of people not generating a whirlpool.
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
The Part Cs I got are the big bore option. The tail pipe on these has an ID of 16mm and an OD of 19mm. With the use of a little hot water the silicone hose I got from Damo, with an ID of 14mm, fitted over the tailpipe with a little encouragement from me - otherwise known as BF & I. The fit is very secure given the length of the tail pipe.
can you post a pic?

How does that compare to mainstream retailers folks?

Most stores do free pickup.
christ... I've seen homebrew shops with less stock ;D
The one that makes me smile is Cooper's European Lager down from £25 to £20 - it's only €15.95 in all the homebrew shops :D

Induction too, great price.
Anyone get one. Couldn't find any in North county Dublin

Nah I went to Aldi and the lad said they didn't get half the stuff they were supposed to this week.
It was over the storms I think, I had my eye on the drill for my malt mill, and it said it was delayed on the website.
Ok, might be worth keeping an eye in the stores so.... Thanks lads

Wife just picked up one of these in Aldi today so might be worth checking out for those who were looking for them.

What part of the country are you in?
She got it in the City. She works near Jervis so where the nearest Aldi is around there.
Aldi induction pot is only 12 litres
I was at Coolmine recycling centre today, there were some fridges put to one side for disposal. A lot of good functioning stuff tends to get thrown out to recycling centers to be replaced by newer models. If the fridge's still work they would be grand for brewing after a thorough cleaning. If they don't work just bring it back.
They have signs up to say goods are not to be removed

We don't allow people to take stuff from the skip sites in Derry either but if you speak to the staff you might find they are willing to turn a blind eye. We definitely get the odd fridge that is in perfect working order and has just been dumped because a person is upgrading or remodelling etc.
The reason you can't is because somebody took one from a recycling centre about 10 years ago, it was faulty started a garage fire and the recipient sued the council, can't remember which one it was in the midlands Laois or Offaly I think.
They won the case as judge ruled that they were a responsible party and should have ensured, even though it was free it was of merchantable quality
Judges love making simple stuff complicated don't they.

Got one of these in Aldi Buncrana this evening....they had 3 left if anyone in the North-West is after one.
It was a guy down the Murrough told me as there was a fridge I had my eye on
I think it's also to deter the Pickaroonies, who used to frequent the old land fill sites

At least you managed to get to talk to him in the 3 hour window they work every week.
They should just cut off the plug!
That way it is no longer functional and cannot be used as is.
Now if I fit a plug to use then its my responsibility.

In May 2017 Go Outdoors offers magazine. Possibly only of use to those in the north? Could potentially make a cheap mash tun for someone.

How big? Amazon have good size coleman ones but they're not cheap.

Passed a few of a similar looking size coolbox in my local Centra yesterday - €8 each
Just like these
Spotted these on donedeal,Firkins for all cask ale lovers. https://www.donedeal.ie/otherbusiness-for-sale/bear-barrells/15165620
Ach!
Got my hopes up there for a minute. I've been on the lookout for ages for some type of storage solution for my bears, but those things look totally unsuitable. At best you might squeeze a koala into one, if you hacked the end off as a makeshift lid, but for anything bigger it just doesn't work.
Disappointed.

(sorry; tried to resist, but am a weak and troubled man)
€3 in Dunnes. They are 500ml to the brim. Solid beer glass.
Picked up a hop plant for sale in my local Lidl yesterday in among various clematis and other climbers. No info on what particular type it was though.
I think it's prima donna

Someone was saying on the Facebook page that they are decorative only and no suitable for beer if they are prima Donna/First gold you're sorted.

yeah Id say they are, theres so many homebrewers with hops that are happy to share cuttings/rhysomes that you dont have to do that guesswork though if you just ask :D that or just use willingham nurserys
Another source says that they are golden tassle hops.
Its usually golden tassel/first gold as they are favour for ornamental use , but make a nice wet hop beer too :)

Deadly, Great work!
I wonder if they know what the %AA is?
Lidl will hopefully do their special in October on Spectrophotometers. O0
Disappointed I missed out on these last year.

The plant doesn't have a AA value it's the hops it produces that has the AA and that varies from year to year on the same plant! Sun, rain, soil type and a whole host of factors influence, in fact there could be a range of AA values in the hops from the one plant!
Challenger has an AA that ranges from 6.5-8.5. Go with the average (7.5), you cant go wrong!!!
It can be a bit of an interesting novelty making a beer with hops you grow in your back garden but don't expect anything amazing. Expect spiders, green fly and a pain in the bollocks.
If anything it'll give you a new found appreciation that good fresh bought hops aren't actually all that expensive because there is value added in how they are processed.
Possible bargain at Aldi. Arcana Irish Red Ale from Italy (6.7%) comes in a fliptop bottle. It's a shorter, stubbier bottle than the standard German ones too, which I think is better. No idea what the beer is like. There was also no price tag available.

Had one of those out of Lidl recently. As fair as I remember it wasn't that bad; nothing earth-shattering. Can't give you a price either, as it was my wife who picked it up for me.
Good if you're collecting 500ml flip tops!

They have a blonde ale I think as well, I got em for the bottles but both beers were fairly meh. They're doing decent glass sets, tulip, stout and teku-type glasses, €4 for a pack of 2.
Have had both the Blonde and Amber and actually are not too bad.LIDL have also a few IPA's on the shelf but would not be so keen.
Picked up another two today as they are quite sessionable plus the bottle so bonus...

Decent price (https://www.tomtop.com/temperature-humidity-instrument-191/p-h10126.html?mid=10000005460&utm_source=EDM&utm_medium=Normal+EDM&utm_campaign=H10126&utm_design=2430&utm_content=2958&aid=TTEDM170717) for a temperature controller. Valid for the next 14 hours.
Looks Dodgy to me. They don't show the front of the controller!
Looking at pics, it appears that it only has one switch for controlling, i.e. it can only heat or cool, not both at the same time (other connector will be for thermocouple probe)

If he gets €100 for that I think I'll sell mine too.
Are they any use?

I thought it was great at first but I had trouble getting beer into the keg without a load of trub. They're good for pulling off clean yeast though if thats a concern for you. Main issue for me though is it takes up my whole fridge so I can only do 1 beer at a time.
I think there great. I have one and you can fill a corner easy using the adapter.
